Multi Evap Split Refrigeration in Breweries

Cost and Energy efficient: Refrigeration is a very important utility in a brewing industry and obviously a major source of energy consumption. Owing to the burning issue on powersavings the focus has certainly shifted to analyse if the current systems areenergy efficient OR there exists a scope to save on power in the current systems. Every unit saved on power not only is cost effective BUT also atribute to a greener and cleaner earth. In an attempt to make systems more andmore energy efficient Hypro, project company based in Pune, India, has focused on energy requirements in a brewery and now has one solution already to be offered.

In a brewery, The Refrigeration Effect is provided using primarily ammonia as refrigerant. Conventionally breweries run with ammonia as primary refrigerant and glycol as secondary. Glycol is then circulated in the brewery and refrigeration effect is produced. later on few breweries opted for direct ammonia expansion scheme to save on enrgy required in the refrigeration plants to some extent by increasing the evaporation temprature of ammonia in the main plant. In theis scheme liquid ammonia is circulated in the brewery instead of glycol.

After a thorough study of operatingconditions, operational and maintenance issues, complexities of handling liquid ammonia in direct ammonia systems “Hypro” has introduced Multi Evap Split Refrigeration System for breweries. The Split Refrigeration System is a combination of glycol system and direct ammonia expansion but a simpler and easy to maintain system yet retaining power saving features.

Basics: A vapour compression refrigeration cycle consumes more energy when it operates at lower suction gas temperatures. As we increase the suction gas temperature we are also increasing the suction gas pressure going by P-T relations. A higher suction pressure means a lower compression ratio when the discharge pressure is fixed.

Usually the discharge pressure is fixed based on environmental conditions across the globe. As we lower the compression ratio we are also lowering the energy consumption since compression ratio isdirectly proportional to the energy consumption.
