Flood Damage – Hygiene Implications

The British Beer & Pub Association have issued a technical circular relating to flood damage of pub cellars and hygiene implications.

It is the responsibility of the pub operator to ensure that the cellar and contents are professionally sanitised.  Documentary evidence that this has been carried out satisfactorily must be presented to any personnel entering the cellar (a certificate, invoice or receipt supplied by the sanitising contractor for work performed is suitable evidence that decontamination has been carried out).  Outlets, which choose to undertake decontamination in-house must do so according to current H&S standards and must include documented risk assessment (including) COSHH and a suitable safety method statement..   Outlets, which choose to undertake decontamination in-house must do so according to current H&S standards and must include documented risk assessment (including) COSHH and a suitable safety method statement.  Sanitisation of the cellar will include equipment, kegs, casks, ducting and gas cylinders.

For Cellar Service Engineers working in pubs, which have not been flooded but do not have potable water please note the following:

Beer lines should only be cleaned using potable water or beer.

Ice makers, which have been subject to non potable water, will require plastic fittings and piping to be thoroughly cleaned and filters replaced.

Post mix dispense, which has been subject to non potable water, will require plastic fittings and piping to be thoroughly sanitised.
