NEW AUTHORISATIONS ABSTRACTION LICENSING IN ENGLAND AND WALES

At 21:00 on Tuesday 31st October DEFRA/Welsh Government (WG) announced that the transitional arrangements for licensing of the currently exempt abstractions for trickle irrigation, quarry
dewatering, geographically exempt areas and other exempt abstractions will come in to force on 1st January 2018. While it can be argued that we have known that this was going to happen since 2003, as a company that has been very close to this issue we have been taken by surprise, so we can appreciate what you may be thinking.

We have presented, in the bulletin below, our first response based on a review of the response to the 2016 consultation published on the 31st October.
We will be reviewing the detail following this announcement and will issue further bulletins as soon as we know practical details. Guidance documents are to be produced by the Environment Agency & Natural Resources Wales (EA/NRW) for “the application period and beyond”.
