Energy Management and Energy Efficient Design (EED) - Michael Clancy - FDT Consulting Engineers & Project Managers Ltd

In this presentation, Michael discusses the Energy Management process and ISO 50001 Energy Management Standard and their applicability to Breweries.  The concept of  Energy Efficient Design is explored, along with its practical application.  To view presentation CLICK HERE

Energy Optimisation through the Brewhouse and Packaging Systems for Microbreweries to Multinationals – David Hallas, Microdat

Microdat look at how the efficiency of a brewhouse can be improved by replacing steam with thermal fluids. This innovative solution to reducing the energy cost of brewing by between 30-45% has no impact on beer quality. Also presented are solutions to further increase energy savings in additional equipment and packaging, with issues such as energy demand and water usage savings explained. The use of anaerobic digesters and efficient effluent treatments for the brewing industry are discussed from an energy saving perspective. Manpower savings follow.  To view presentation CLICK HERE

Recovering and Reusing Energy – Martin Hobbs, FMA Process Engineering Ltd

The presentation introduces the subject of recovering and reusing energy in the brewing industry by outlining the energy efficiency hierarchy, the forms of energy used for recovery and the issues with energy recovery, in particular the requirement for a thermal gradient, the cost of surface area and the timing of energy capture and release. This is followed by a review of techniques and applications for heat recovery used in the brewing industry and an appraisal of their commercial payback. Three case studies are then examined: Brewhouse liquor / energy balance; heat recovery in hot CIP and boiler-house opportunities. The conclusions drawn are that energy efficiency trumps energy recovery, there are some design issues with long paybacks (particularly retrofits) and some proven solutions for the brewing (and dairy) industries, some with low paybacks.  To view presentation CLICK HERE

Brewery Progress towards Carbon Neutrality through an Holistic Approach - John Hancock, Briggs of Burton Plc

This presentation highlights principles which can be used across the brewery to minimise energy (and water) use, and maximise energy re-use, without compromising the key process operations which are essential to produce a quality beer. This will include techniques which may be well proven in other parts of the world, and are often relatively simple, but are not common practice in Britain. Recent process innovations giving opportunities for further gains will also be reviewed.  Toi view presentation CLICK HERE

Murphy & Son Ltd started trading in 1887 in Leeds as A.J.Murphy, becoming a successful selling agent for a variety of brewing materials.

In 1919, the newly incorporated Murphy & Son Ltd moved to its present premises, a splendid Victorian Tower Brewery, based at Old Basford in Nottingham. During the twentieth century, their  product range and services grew steadily to include formulated liquor treatments, preservatives, yeast foods, copper and auxiliary finings, cleaning materials and enzymic stabilisers. Always supporting their customers with expert technical backup, laboratory analysis and product use optimisations.

Their support of the micro brewery market from the early 1980's has been key to their growing success and underpins their future strategy for growth, both in the UK and into Europe.

During the last ten years, they have made five acquisitions and, with the addition of several strategic alliances, they have extended their product range to provide the industry with a comprehensive 'one stop shop' to cover most brewers' needs, large and small alike.

They offer a comprehensive range of processing aids for clarification and since 2002 including the manufacture of their own isinglass brand. They offer laboratory services to help solve most brewers’ problems, a friendly team of technical experts, together with two user friendly web sites: explaining further what they are about and promoting safe manual handling products for the associated distribution industry and for the movement of kegs around breweries, on drays and in cellars and trade outlets.

Their laboratories continually strive to improve product performance and develop new products for their exciting industry. One successful recent development has been the introduction of their zetolite range to help cure off flavours and sulphury taints in beers and lagers.
